Giving back at Nsansa Village
Preparing for the visit
Planning for our visit to Nsansa Village required a bit of organising. We knew we wanted to make the most of what we had, so we made a trip to a wholesaler called Jumbo—quite a distance to drive!—just to ensure we were getting the best possible value on food, toiletries, and other essentials.
Friends and our wider community really came through as well. We collected clothes from all over, with a special shoutout to Natasha, who contributed what could only be described as a full wardrobe!
Sharing stories and building connections
After arriving and settling in, we spent some time simply talking to the boys. They were eager to share their stories, and it was humbling to hear about the challenges they’d faced. Despite it all, each boy seemed excited to tell their story. Some boys shared their dreams, hobbies, and ambitions. Those conversations put so much into perspective.
The football game
After our chats, we felt it was time for a bit of fun—we settled on a football match. The boys had a natural talent for the game, and it was great to see their passion. They played with an energy that was contagious, and before long, we were all caught up in the joy of the game. It was a wonderful opportunity to go beyond the physical act of giving.
Distributing the donations
Once we finished playing, we prepared to hand out the donations. Each bag was filled with clothes, shoes, and toiletries, and we had separate bags for food and textbooks. The boys gathered around, happy to see what we had brought for them. It was heartwarming to witness their joy as they received the items. It made all the effort worthwhile.
Saying goodbye
As the day wrapped up, we said our goodbyes. There was a sense of community in the time we had spent together. We took a group photo before leaving, capturing the smiles and warmth we felt. Seeing their appreciation reminded us that simple gestures and genuine interactions can go a long way. Nsansa Village has a special place in our hearts, and I know we are all only at the beginning of a longer journey to give back and connect with others.
